What to expect from a cosmetic dentist consultation

The field of cosmetic dentistry is growing evermore popular, as it focuses on improving smiles using a range of carefully targeted dental treatments or procedures. The most common procedures can vary from the more quick-acting options like teeth whitening and veneers, to orthodontics and dental implants – each with varying expectations from the clients we welcome into our Liverpool surgery on a daily basis.

Cosmetic dentistry offers more than just a range of solutions to enhance the aesthetics of your teeth and gums; it also gives you a confidence boost, can encourage a more rigorous self-care routine, and as many of our patients put it, can change your life!

Here's our guide to what you can expect from a cosmetic dental consultation, and how to make the most out of your appointment with your chosen dental professional.

Getting to know you

During your consultation with a cosmetic dentist, the ultimate focus should be on understanding your specific needs and what you will eventually desire regarding your smile makeover. It's essential that you communicate openly with your dentist about a range of factors - most importantly, your goals, concerns, and expectations. Here are some key points you should consider discussing at your initial appointment:

  • The desired outcome of your cosmetic treatments or procedures. Are there any treatments you’d prefer to go for over others? If so, think about why. Don’t let your budget guide your treatment, but it’s equally as important not to let your dentist guide your budget!

  • Any specific cosmetic issues you plan to tackle (e.g., crooked teeth, stained teeth, gaps). Your dentist may recommend certain treatments during your consultation that you may not have considered before. Don’t go in with a closed mind, but don’t take every word they say as a must – at Kamran Rasul, patient autonomy is of the utmost importance to our team.

  • Your budget. We will always do our best as a team to fulfil your smile goals, whilst also taking your budget into account.

  • The timeline for treatment you’re expecting. Do you need to be in work the next day? Are you expecting the outcomes within one visit to the surgery?

  • Any previous dental procedures you may have had that could impact the outcome of your new treatments. For example, it’s important to mention any fillings, crowns, or composite bonding treatments on the teeth you are looking to have work done on.

  • Whether you have any underlying dental or medical conditions that may affect treatment options. If you have certain conditions such as diabetes, these are always worth mentioning as they could impact the healing process involved with some procedures.

Questions You Could Ask

Asking pre-planned questions during your consultation with a cosmetic dentist can help you gain a better understanding of whether they’re the right dental professional for you. Doing this can also help you determine how successful the proposed treatment plan may be in terms of your goals, as well as the qualifications of the dental team you’re working with. Here are some questions to consider asking that can help you determine what’s best for you:

  • Alternatives - Are there alternative treatment options you offer that might better suit my circumstances or budget? Be sure to do your research outside of your appointment; look online and at competitors.

  • Experience - What are the qualifications and experience of the dental team members performing the procedures?

  • Treatment timeframes - How long will the entire treatment process take, and what can I expect during each stage?

  • Aftercare - Are there any aftercare tips you would give following the treatment? Will I need time off work?

  • Risks or complications - Are there any potential risks and complications associated with the treatments you advise? What are the chances of these?

  • Before and after comparisons - Could I see any before and after photos of your patients who have undergone similar treatments?

Things to look out for

When you’re seeking a reliable cosmetic dentist, it's essential that you first make sure their recommendations do ultimately align with your cosmetic goals and expectations. As well as this, it’s worth thinking about more than just your goals. It’s about whether you feel comfortable with the dentist's overall manner, their level of professionalism, and how way they communicate with you as a patient. Here are just a few of the things you should think about during your consultation with them.

  • Their Recommendations vs. Your Expectations - Do the dentist's recommendations align with your cosmetic goals and expectations? If not, why not?

  • Your Budget – You have your budget in mind for a reason! Does the proposed treatment plan fit within your budget? Are they willing to make adjustments based on your budget?

  • Reviews, Images and Testimonials - Do consider checking online reviews and testimonials from previous patients – this could give you a deeper insight as to whether they truly want the best for their clients.
